Apple’s M5 Delivers AI and GPU Gains Across Devices
Apple just annocued some new products like the new 14-inch MacBook Pro, new iPad Pro 11-inch and 13-inch models, and the new Vision Pro. All of these products don’t have huge redesigns on the hardware side, but they are all powered by the new M5 chip, which made them a lot faster than last year’s products.
The M5 has a third-generation 3m design and a new 10-core GPU architecture. The key numbers are: 4x peak GPU compute vs M4, 15% faster CPU, and 30% more memory bandwidth. John Srouji said it is the “next big leap in AI performance.”
The new 10-core GPU with Neural Acceleration in each one makes the chip 4x faster at computing than the M4, and an impressive 6x better than the M1 at AI. The new ray-tracing engine makes for a 45% better graphics performance. The chip also brings smooth visuals and a 120Hz refresh rate to the Vision Pro.
The 16-core Neural Engine makes for more efficient energy usage and also supports Apple Intelligence features like Image Playground, Gemoji, and writing tools better. It also makes for faster AI image generation and local LLM processing.
The M5 chip also brings a unified memory bandwidth of up to 30% to 153GB/s. This allows large AI models to run entirely on the device. 32GB options also support multitasking and creative suites for apps like Photoshop and Final Cut. The chip also brings better power efficiency architecture and extends battery life, which connects to Apple’s 2030 carbon-neutral goal.
The new M5 chip strengthens Apple’s control over hardware and the AI ecosystem. It bridges performance between Mac, iPad, and Vision Pro, with a focus on blending AI, creativity, and efficiency. All the products are available to pre-order now.
Would you buy a new product mostly for the chip, like the new MacBook Pro, iPad, and Vision Pro? Do you think that Apple has one of the best chips for consumer devices? If not, who does? Let us know in the comments!
