ChatGPT Officially has an App Store Called App Director

OpenAI has officially launched its own App Store called App Director in ChatGPT, making the normal chatbot interface into an action layer platform.

Users can find apps in the Tools menu or at chat.com/apps, allowing them to browse featured categories such as Productivity, Lifestyle, and Education. Instead of just text, the apps allow users to complete real-world tasks, like ordering groceries, ordering food, or turning notes into a slide deck, without leaving the chat interface.

Apps can be opened during a chat using @mention, like @ Spotify, or through automated recommendations based on the context of the conversation.

Developers can also now use Apps SDK (which is in beta) and the Model Context Protocol, or MCP, to build chat-native experiences that include interactive UI widgets and secure data connections.

There is a new submission process that is live on OpenAI’s Developer Platform, requiring apps to be tightly scoped and deliver clear value while meeting high-quality safety standards.

Developers can monetize by linking users to their own website or native apps to complete transactions for physical goods. OpenAI is also exploring internal monetization options, including digital goods and in-app commerce, to build an ecosystem for creators and businesses.

All of the apps that are submitted must include clear privacy policies and follow the OpenAI usage guidelines to ensure that they are appropriate for all people. Also, developers are required to request only the specific information needed to make the app function, preventing data collection.

When a user connects to an app, ChatGPT discloses what data will be shared with the third party, putting the final decision in the user's hands. Thankfully, users maintain full control over their digital environments, with the ability to disconnect apps at any time, which immediately deletes the app’s access to their account data.
