Porsches’s new Cayenne charges very differently compared to the cars today

If you look back in the years, you can see that wireless charging has transformed the smartphone market. Now Porsche is bringing that to the EV market, and the Cayenne Electric will be the first car to get it.

Technology

What Porsche will use to make this happen is a 11 kW inductive charging system. That is just one box, no wall box or extra control unit is required. This system also has a better efficiency of up to 90% compared to wired AC charging.

Convenience

How this is good for buyers is because 75% of Porsche EV charging happens at home, and this base plate can fit in garages, carpets, or even driveways. The simple park and charge feature with automatic alignment, just make it so easy to do. They’re even safety features like a motion detector, foreign object detector, and an automatic shutoff mode.

Another area this could be used in is parking lots. You could pull in, have it charge while you go inside a store, and come out with a fuller battery! Just imagine how much that could help people adopt EVs better. This plate can even charge under a thin sheet of ice and leafs.

Hardware in the Cayenne Electric

How the Cayenne Electric can connect with this base plat is it has a receiver unit on the underbody that’s between the front wheels. When the car reaches the preferred charging alignment it will also do a Coll thing by automatically lowering the car for better charging.

All of this is integrated into the My Porsche app that helps with tracking and scheduling. It will also do the same things that older Porsche electric models can do like timers and preconditioning.

Features

For connectivity to your phone and other devices like the car, the base plate has support for LTE and Wi-Fi for software updates, is certified for CE and UL, which meets both safety standers in the EU and US, and the plate is also tested for durability and weather resistance.

Fast Charging

The Cayenne Electric will also support DC fast charging up to 400 kW and is positioned beside the Macan and Taycan as some of the charging leaders. All of this fits into the Porsche Lounge infrastructure.

The Prototype

The prototype of this wireless charging site was first show at the IAA Mobility Show in Munich, Germany and the car was painted with fluorescent paint what uses electroluminescent coating that lights up with electricity. It is unique and has a 25 layer paint process, which is definitely an experimental design.

Broader Context

All of this comes apart of the Enter Electric! campaign form the Volkswagen group. This is Porsche’s move toward everyday usability, for batter EV adoption.

The Cayenne will have its world premiere in 2025 and the rollout of the wireless charging system is expected in 2026.

Is this the feature that will help people adopt EVs faster? Do you like how Porsche is leaning into this technology. Let use know in the Comments!
