Porsche needs to watch their back with the new Polestar 5

Polestar officially announced their all new Polestar 5, that is based off of the 2020 Precept concept car. There will be two versions coming, on priced at $129,000 and another at $154,00. Orders for the Polestar 5 started yesterday, and will be available in 24 global markets.

Why It Matters

The Polestar 5 is aimed as Polestar’s flagship luxury and performance EV, rivaling the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S Plaid. The vehicle it built on a new premium aluminum platform, that is lighter and stiffer than steel. The all new platform also uses recycled materials, to be more sustainable.

Design

Even though the Precept was just a concept, the Polestar 5 looks like it with very few changes. It has a sleek, silhouette with a Kamm rear tail, that helps with aerodynamics. The headlights are Pixel LED, the nose has a SmartZone sensor in it, the door handles are flush, the glass is frameless, the roof is the biggest glass roof ever in a Polestar, and it will also be available in colors 6 color options. All of these improvements to the design, gives the Polestar 5 an amazing drag coefficient of 0.24.

Interior

The car will seat four peoples, with seats by Recaro that are heated, ventilated, and give massages. For sustainable materials it uses 40% less plastic, recycled fishing nets for the carpets, and uses leather from food-industry byproducts. The interior also looks like a huge lounge with its huge glass panoramic glass roof.

Technology

In the Polestar 5 there is a huge 14.5-inch central display that has Automotive OS, with Google built-in. There is also a 9-inch driver cluster display, and a 9.5 inch head-up display.

For audio there is a standard 10-speaker setup, or an optimal 21-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system, that gives an impressive 1,680 watts of audio power. There also is laser ambient lighting and active road noise cancellation, that give the car a more relaxed feeling environment.

Safety

With the SmartZone in the cone that has camera and sensors, it gives the Polestar 5 a total of 11 vision camera. Other safety features include driver monitoring, interior radar for children and pet detection, and 12 ultrasonic sensors.

It come with Pilot Assist which has adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping for up to 93 mph.

Performance

the Polestar 5 has two options, one with 737 hp, 599 lb-ft of torque, goes 0–60 in 3.9s, and has a 416 mile range. The other one has 884 hp, 749 lb-ft of torque, goes from 0–60 in 3.2s, and has a 351 mile range.

The top speed of both of them is 155 mph, and the brakes are 4-piston Brembos, with lightweight discs that save 26 pounds. The more capable model also has an adaptive MagneRide suspension.

Competition

The Polestar 5 is competing with the Porsche Taycan, Tesla Model S Plaid, Lucid Air, and Mercedes EQS AMG. But the thing that sets the Polestar 5 apart is how it uses Scandinavian minimalist design and is sustainably focused. Production starts in 2025 with sales expected in 2026.
