Spotify Expands Managed Accounts for Young Listeners

Spotify has just announced that it is expanding its managed accounts feature for children under 13. The features will be rolling out to seven markets: the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, and the Netherlands, and will be part of the Premium Family Plan, which is designed for kids with parental supervision. It aims to balance independence and safety for young listeners.

These new features follow after successful pilots in 10 countries, including Sweden, New Zealand, Spain, and Brazil. The managed account offers customized recommendations and familiar Spotify features like Discovery Weekly and Daily. This adds value for Family Plan subscribers who want to create custom profiles for kids.

The benefits come for both parents and kids. Each managed account keeps a listening history and wrapped results separately, which should help avoid kids influencing parents’ playlists or recommendations. It also encourages shared family listening while giving kids a sense of ownership of their music choices. It was designed to make family streaming more convenient and enjoyable for all.

The settings and parental controls include: explicit content filters, artist restriction, and video hiding options. There are also age-gated features like messaging. Spotify is emphasizing responsible and child-friendly music exploration. Basically, it’s focused on privacy and control for networks.

Parents can set up managed accounts via the Spotify app or account page, with the option to add a listener aged under 13. Spotify does provide a Parent Guide with safety and music tips. This expansion shows Spotify’s commitment to family-friendly listening.

What do you think about this new feature? What do you think of Spotify’s stance on family listening experiences? Would you change this feature, and if you did, what would you change? Let us know in the comments!
