Google and Ford Partner to Make the TransAmerica Trail Available in Street View

To bring America’s longest off-road route, the TransAmerica Trail, to Street View, Google and Ford are teaming up. The trail spans about 5,900 miles, going from Oregon to North Carolina. It is a legendary off-road path that is known for its rugged, remote landscape and diverse terrain. It will be the first time that a full coast-to-coast trail has been digitally captured for public viewing. This project could help more people see parts of America that they would not have seen otherwise.

It was captured by a Ford Bronco that was equipped with Google’s latest Street View camera for the journey. The team drove through unpaved roads, steep cliffs, deserts, forests, and rivers to capture the 360 imagery. Now, anyone can virtually explore the trail through Street View, even if they can’t physically travel there, and that is one of the reasons for doing this. It connects off-road adventure with digital exploration, a mix of tech and travel.

Do you think that Street View could replace real-world exploration in the future? If you could experience this in something like the Vision Pro, do you think you would enjoy it more? What other famous routes or landmarks should Google capture next? Let us know in the comments!
