Gemini’s Deep Research Can Now Read Your Gmail and Docs

Google has upgraded Gemini Deep Research to connect with Gmail, Drive, and Chat. It is a version of Gemini that is designed to handle multi-step research and report creation. Google called this “one of our most-requested features.” This turns Gemini from just a simple chatbot to something closer to a research assistant.

How it works is by letting users select Deep Research and choose which sources, like Google Search, Gmail, Drive, or Chat, that they would like Gemini to use. One example that Google gave is: analyzing project plans, emails, and team documents to make a market report or competitor summary. The AI can combine private and public data to create detailed and editable reports. Users will even be able to output results to Google Docs or even have the AI create a podcast for them.

The feature is only on desktop right now, with a mobile experience coming soon. This update fits into Google’s larger plan to make Gemini central to Workspace productivity. The pros are that it will make more helpful reports and make for a streamlined workflow, but there are also some privacy concerns with AI reading personal data. This update could also blur the lines between research and personal data management, so we’ll have to see how it goes.

Would you feel ok with Gemini reading your email and Drive files? How do you see Deep Research fitting into your work or studies? Let us know in the comments!
