Brighter, Smarter, Sharper. Dolby Vision 2 Is Here
Dolby Laboratories has officially announced Dolby Vision 2, which is the next generation of its HDR technology. This update is said to help picture quality, by taking advantage of new TV hardware, while also giving creators powerful tools to bring their idea to life.
Hisense will be the first TV company to add Dolby Vision 2 to its premium tv lineup. For content, the first company to commit to this standard is, French media provider Canal+ has said they will be supporting Dolby Vision on their TV shows, and live sports broadcasting.
Building on Dolby Vision
For over a decade, Dolby Vision had been looked at as the best at HDR picture quality. But with TVs getting brighter, sharper, more colorful, and creators wanting better control, Dolby saw that they could lead the format.
“We've reached an inflection point where TV technology has dramatically changed while artists continue to demand even more innovative tools,” said Dolby’s Senior Vice President of Entertainment, John Couling. “Dolby Vision 2 redefines how we think of Dolby Vision to unleash the full capabilities of modern TVs while giving artists unprecedented opportunities to push their creative boundaries further than ever before.”
Future Technology
One of the driving things of Dolby Vision 2 is a redesigned Dolby Image Engine. The new system was built to unlock the full potential of newer displays in movies, TV, sports, and gaming,.
The update also introduces Content Intelligence. A new AI powered set a features that help make the picture better for both content and the viewing environment. Cool features include:
Precision Black: which improves clarity in dark scene.
Light Sense: Will use ambient light detection and lighting data from content to help with brightness and color.
Sports and Gaming: Will have smoother motion, better white balance, and controls designed for fast moving scenes.
Dolby Vision 2 also will help TVs and creators to work together to make use of high performance displays. The product is higher brightness, better contrast, and even better colors.
Two different options for TVs
Dolby Vision 2 will be available in two versions for TV makers:
Dolby Vision 2 Max: a full premium feature area designed for the most advanced TVs.
Dolby Vision 2: improvements for models.
Hisense will be the fist TV manufacture to use the new Dolby Vision 2 in their TV’s.

With Dolby Vision 2, Dolby isn’t just upgrading HDR, it’s making a way for a new decade of new picture innovation. By putting smarter picture optimization, creator driven tools, and industry partners together, the company is trying to make sure that what people see at home looks as close as possible, to what the creators wanted.
