Can Pixel’s AI Notifications Avoid Apple’s Mistakes?
Google’s latest Pixel update is notification summaries. They are AI-generated recaps of long chat threads, and they will be rolling out on the Pixel 9 series and newer, just not the 9A, which is sad, because I feel like it should get this feature if it is good. Apple Intelligence tried something similar, but they faced some reliability issues, so it’s Google's turn to do it now! Google is also taking smaller steps than Apple did by limiting this feature to chat apps for now, but hopefully, they will expand.
It was hard for Apple to do this, but Google hopes that focusing on long chats will give it better AI accuracy. Mishaal Rahman’s Android 16 beta findings hinted at this cautious rollout and also how context-based summaries might help them avoid mistakes. December’s planned update is where Google will take the next step with automatic notification sorting and scheduling low-priority alerts, similar to Apple’s AI organization tool.
There has also been a rollout of scam detection, now working with third-party apps like Telegram and Discord, and also extending to calls in certain countries. Other features, like AI photo remix in Messages and VIP chat prioritization, make this update more about everyday convenience rather than just AI experiments. This could make the Pixel feel smarter, but is it actual innovation or just Google catching up to Apple’s operating system?
Do you trust Google’s AI text summaries will be better than Apple’s? Do you think Apple should have started small like Google did? Let us know in the comments!
