Google’s AI, Gemini, is Coming to Android Auto, Making Tasks Easier Than Ever

Google has been adding Gemini to a lot of its products; now, Google is adding Gemini to Android Auto, so now we have AI almost everywhere in Google’s ecosystem. It is described as a truly conversational voice assistant that helps drivers with messages, directions, and errands. To use it, customers will first need to download the Gemini app on their Android phone, then drivers can activate the AI by just saying “Hey Google,” Pressing the mic button on the car screen, or long-pressing the voice control button on the steering wheel.

Google says that Gemini offers a change over older voice assistants, letting users talk more naturally and handle more complex tasks than before. The goal is to let drivers do things while keeping their hands totally on the wheel and their eyes on the road, which is definitely a good idea! You will also be able to ask Gemini to perform tasks like finding restaurants with specific cuisine, messaging friends your ETA and an emoji, check calendars, or even find addresses in emails. The chatbot can also just chat, helping users learn about things, brainstorm, or even rehearse for important moments.

Vehicles with built-in Android operating systems like Polestars will be getting Gemini next, but the assistant is not available for Apple CarPlay users, and Google has no updates on when that might ever change, probably another reason to get an Android phone. But we do have to wonder if the AI will make for a lot more distractions, because early research shows that older speech-based assistants were usually linked with a moderate level of cognitive distraction. So we will have to see how this goes!

Do you think that if you can, you will use this new Gemini integration? Why or why not? Do you feel like you would be totally fine to talk to an AI about stuff? What AI do you use? If you do, is it Gemini? Let us know in the comments!
